Fish

(To be sung in a sprightly sing-song sort of fashion)

Today is a special day
Just because we’re together.
Let’s spend it in a special way;
Let’s spend the day eating fish.
I love fish when it’s smoked over a Cedar fire.
I love fish when it’s dipped in lemon-dill batter and fried.
I love fish when it’s chewy, jerked with Jamaican spices.
I
Love
Fish.

Winter Afternoon

The yellow schoolbus disappears, reappearing
above a clump of evergreens as it labors
uphill to deliver its passengers to their homes,
homes warmed by the smell of roasting meat, carrots, potatoes,
Noble firs, gingerbread cookies, coffee brewing, fires crackling at the hearth.
Silver plumes of smoke rise from the chimneys on the hillside
Then join the steely storm clouds bringing snow.

Callella

Aloe cools the sun’s
fiery touch; Sangria
stokes the flames within.

Iambic Pentameter

The smell of cashmere and gasoline rose
From still-warm clothing piled behind the couch.
A lusty fire crackled at the hearth.
On the table stood a pitcher of
Iced coffee. Tiny beads of moisture ran
Down the glasses soaking the tablecloth.
Beside the sofa droplets of sweat formed,
Trickled and pooled like their chilly cousins.

Raccoons prowled through the garbage cans.
A brown bear sent them chittering away.

I think I’ll call my newest knitted scarf
Chiaroscuro since the darker colors and
The light ones pool like shadows and the sun.
The play of variations makes me smile;
The difference makes the effect more intense
Like a frosty glass touched to a steaming back.
