Like a dog-eared page corner

The cat’s upward-thrust leg marks the spot
she was washing
Before headlights on the wall
Drew her eye
Dazzling her
Making her lose- for just an instant- her place in the bath.

Fur Majesty

As if all cats were queen
And our job is too serve,
To carry her little handbag,
To make her crown secure,
To tie her silk head scarf,
Freshen her loo with greenery,
Drive her to the country
Should she want a change of scenery,
Take charge of her meals,
Don’t let her feet get wet,
Cosset her, never fuss her,
She believes she’s everyone’s pet
And our job is to serve-
As if all cats were queen.
As if
All cats
Are queen.

Bossing The Cat

Yawn then look behind you.
Go into your room and meow.
Stretch and lick your ankle.
Look all around for fuzzy mice.

Siren

thirsting for blood, cat
rolls on her back, sings to us:
“Come… Rub my tummy.”

Cat wakes midnap to
Wash her face and paws. Oh, cat!
What dirty mischief
Did you make in your dreams that
You need to clean up so soon?

Night Shift

As I pause in the doorway of their bedroom,
I can see the moonlight filtering through the blinds,
Shining in the Vick’s Vapo-Rub on Mom’s top lip.
I don’t want to disturb the cat or wake Mom up;
She got so little sleep last night I’m surprised
She made it all the way into her nightgown and bed
Before she was down for the count. The Vick’s
Seems to have helped a little; She’s still congested but
At least she’s snoring now and if she’s snoring then
She’s sleeping and breathing and that’s all I
Wanted to know. I just wanted to check on her.
And that’s why I’m standing here in the doorway,
In the moonlit darkness, where she used to stand
All those nights years ago to check on me.

Things We Love

We love the fluffy lamby clouds,
Sapphire skies that hold them;
Plush cashmere sweaters at The Gap,
The well-trained staff who fold them.

We love our morning cup of joe,
Kind souls who brew it for us;
Cats that perk up when we get home;
Usually they ignore us.

We love new shoes, dark chocolate bars,
How trees bud in the spring,
But darn it! Rudy Fernandez
Surpasses everything.
