The Exiles

I found three bananas in the white plastic bag.
This is surely the worst place for them.
It means they’ve been lying in the dark,
Breathing their own gases for a week.
They were half-hidden by a roll of paper towels
That I didn’t need until this morning.
There’s hardly any yellow left on their skins.
Their spots are so dark brown now
They seem to dance
Like the ones you see right before you collapse.
Anna and I don’t like bananas- NOKD-
But my mother sent them in a care package
Last week when we had a cold.
They came with good intentions, in other words,
Then we rejected them and forgot them
Like a Whitman sampler without the map.

Socks & Squirrels

For Kodi (with help from Kodi)

I found a dirty sock on the playground.
I buried it under the wood chips.
I was hoping a tree would grow there with new socks on it
To replace the ones Mom loses in the wash.
On days it rained and we couldn’t go outside
I thought about all that water carrying food to my sock.
If it was stormy and the wind blew hard, it was okay.
The wind was clearing away the weeds, making room for my tree to grow.
Then one day, on the playground, my teacher came up to me all excited.
“Come quick! There’s something you have to see!”
This is so cool!” I thought. “It worked!
We’ll have new socks forever for free!”
But when I followed her pointing
All I saw was a stupid fluffy brown squirrel.
“Isn’t that great?” My teacher sang.
“He’s bigger than your head.”
I looked at his tree again and got mad.
Do you know what that sneaky squirrel had done?
He stole the root from my sock tree and he used it to cushy up his home.
