No Whimsy Permitted: This Is Algebra

My daughter is solving problems with imaginary numbers.
“I can help,” I said.
“I have plenty of imagination.”
“We’ll try one problem,” she said.
“And they’re fractions.”
“Okay,” I said, “the first answer should be 4726.5 over hippopotamus.”
No,” she said.
“Sometimes the teacher will give you points for effort if you can explain your solution.
But an answer with hippopotamus in it?
You wouldn’t even get that.”
